Butane (methylethylmethane, 1,2-dimethylethane, n-butane, CH3CH2CH2CH3, butane liquefied, pure butane, normal butane) is a combustible, colorless, non-toxic gas liquefied under pressure, with a weak specific odor. In high concentrations, it is toxic, detrimental to the nervous system, causes suffocation and cardiac arrhythmia. At high temperatures, it completely burns, forming carbon dioxide and water. Butane forms an explosive mixture with air up to 1.7% by volume. The auto ignition temperature (at a pressure of 0.1 MPa, 760 mm.t.) is 405 ° C. It is highly soluble in organic solvents, slightly soluble in water.

Butane is indispensable as a solvent for de-waxing and de-asphalting petroleum products, in the polymerization of vinyl esters and in the extraction of fats.
